Last weeks of classes available

We are heading into the home stretch for our summer swim season.  We are getting lots of calls wanting make up classes.  Please remember that if you take a spot that means we can't put someone else there and our instructors are there to teach whether they have students or not.  We are happy to try to offer make up lessons where there are openings in existing classes.  We will gladly offering a refund if we are able to fill a spot with a paying student.  (Students taking spots as a make-up for their missed class(es) does/do not apply to this scenario.)

Summer Swim Session

It has been a busy few days, but our Customer Portal is up and running.  You are able to schedule free placement testing (required for Semi-Private classes) or schedule Private lessons now.  You will be asked if you are willing to have semi-private classes when you check out.  You will be charged the private rate of $25/half hour lesson until we are able to determine your student's level and place 1-2 students of the same level with your student.

If you do not wish to be charged for the private rate, please schedule placement testing and following that, we will attempt to place you in a semi-private class with same level student, or create a spot for your semi-private class with the determined level.  We currently have semi-private openings we are trying to fill for preschool, level I and Level II.  After placement testing, we will be happy to discuss these with you.

Thank you!

Valerie Hunt, Business Manager
We are still working on the summer calendar, but I do have some datesfor those wishing to get started with swim before school is out.

Trent is teaching Tuesdays and has times available between 6:30pm and 7:30 pm for private and semi-private from now until May 22nd and 6-8pm on Tuesday, May 29th.  He will also be available on Wednesdays, May 16th, 23rd, and 30th between 6 and 8pm.
Kenzi is available on Saturdays, May 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th between noon and 2pm.
Please send me a text if you would like to schedule one of these times.  For semi-private, we do a free placement testing so that we can group students with those with same/similar skills.  These will be available following lessons on the above dates.

Text Valerie at 801-414-9048 to schedule either or email her at littleflippersswimacademy@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Valerie

Finishing up our Summer Season!

This has been an exciting summer with roller coaster ups and downs.  Our private and semi-private lessons with McKenzi have been terrific and we are finishing up the last couple weeks with our students as we prepare for the start of school in a few weeks.

We have had many ask if Kenzi or Trent will be teaching this Fall.  The answer at this point is we are unsure.  Once school starts, Kenzi may decide she has time to add some spots.  Be sure to let us know if you want to be placed on a list to be contacted.

Otherwise, we will send out an email prior to lessons beginning next summer to notify those who have asked to be contacted.

Thanks!

Valerie

Good News and Bad News

This week has been one for the books!

Sunday, Fathers' Day, I learned that my best friend's mom had died.

Later, the same day, our 26 year old son called us asking what time we were headed to my parents' for our Fathers' Day BBQ.  He said he had been so sick Saturday that he couldn't get out of bed, but was feeling a little better and wanted to go... he thought it was something he ate.  Long story, short - we took him to the ER and he was admitted and had an emergency appendectomy in the wee hours Monday morning.  His appendix was gangrenous and ready to burst, but they got it out in time.  We are so grateful!

We arrived home late Monday morning and weren't there 30 minutes when the police arrived to follow up on our neighbors complaint about our swimming classes.  I missed the visit by the police, because I had taken my 13 year old to get her shattered phone fixed.  I had paid the deductible on the insurance on Friday and had not had time to take it in.  My plan had been to drop it off and come home and get some sleep.

Trent and I did a conference call with the nice Lehi officer.  He let us know that they don't look for businesses breaking the law, but we had at least one complaint.  He asked us to follow up with the city.  He said he wasn't saying to drop everything and go now, but to follow up "sooner rather than later."  We didn't tell the officer about just getting home from the hospital, but since I needed to be a nurse for my son, I was very grateful.

After caring for my son and attending the funeral of my friend's mom Wednesday, I decided I was ready to face the music with Lehi City.

What wonderful people we have that work there!  The first lady I spoke with said she would consider having her kids take lessons from us because we offered classes after normal work hours and had a salt water chlorinated pool as her kids developed rashes at the rec center.  We had envisioned, when we applied for our license, that we would be able to fit everyone who wanted to stay to watch their kids' lessons on our driveway and RV pad that runs the length of our acre lot.  In our 6 years teaching in West Jordan, all parking was on the street and mostly in our circle in front of our neighbors homes.  No one complained and in fact, most had their kids or grandkids take lessons from us at one time or other.  We gathered around the pool and visited and rejoiced in our kids achievements.  In the 2 years we have been in Lehi, I can say we have experienced much of the same.

We have had neighbors offer parking space on their land.  Suggestions have been made to drop off kids and not allow families to stay and watch.  Lehi City also limits the number of students to 24 a day (which we didn't surpass here), but that there can only be 2 classes of 12 kids max per day.  In order for us to teach a class at each level and fit in that requirement, we would need to teach Monday through Saturday with 2 classes each day or cover two skill levels (12 kids at a time) .  Not sure that would make the neighbors happy, but we would be within the law to do so.  Since we never wanted to upset our neighbors, we are only planning to do individualized instruction for now.

Trent was bullied as a child.  He has a big heart and told our neighbor the day she came over yelling and swearing at him in our back yard, that if he couldn't keep his voice down enough that she was okay with it we wouldn't teach, and he meant it, because we care about our neighbors.  We would have worked with our neighbors, but they would not return texts or calls asking for feed back on how we were doing.

I truly believe that when we stand at the judgement bar of God, we will be judged on how well we loved.  Matthew 26: 36-40 KJV

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

I believe when we do the loving things, then we wouldn't break any other commandments.  We wouldn't steal, covet, cheat on our spouses, lie, dishonor our parents, etc.

Thank you again for the kind words from so many.  We truly feel loved and appreciated.  The timing of this is good for Trent.  He begins his 3 years in his volunteer position as the Director and Regional Chair for the heating and refrigerant engineers (representing 16 states) on Wednesday.  Between that and his assistant coaching for AF High School Wrestling team, church callings, and a few other things he does to give back to the community, he will still be plenty busy.

Keep checking back.  Our individualized instruction will continue.  You can reach me at 801-414-9048 or email me at LifeSkillsAcademyllc@gmail.com

Sad Announcement

We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of our new neighbors in Lehi and teaching kids swim skills.  We enjoyed 6 years teaching group swimming lessons to kids in West Jordan prior to moving here and our neighbors sent their kids and grand kids to us.  Many in Lehi have done the same.  It has been an amazing experience and we are so grateful to those who put their trust in us.

However, our next door neighbor has voiced her frustration with Trent's voice volume when coaching in the pool.  We thought he had reduced his volume sufficiently, but last week we discovered that was not the case.

We have decided that our desire to keep the peace with our neighbors outweighs the benefit of giving back to the community through group swimming lessons.   We have benefited by getting to know so many in our area and have made many friends along the way.

Please contact me at 801-414-9048 to discuss this information further.

Valerie (& Trent)

Session I is underway

The first night of swimming lessons for our 2017 season was a blast!  It is fun to see the kids with "Coach" Trent in the pool.  He has never referred to himself as "Coach" or asked the kids to call him that, but they do.  When I heard young Austin address him that way Tuesday night, I thought how fitting it was.  He definitely coaches the kids to be awesome swimmers.

We hear it said all the time, "Now that we have had swim with you, we will never go back to the rec center."

I understand completely.  Little Flippers started because Trent was unhappy with the results our kids were getting at the rec center.  I suggested he teach the kids himself.  He did try, but he was stopped at the community pool and told he couldn't teach his own children because their insurance wouldn't cover it.

After that, we decided to put a pool in ourselves and teach other kids as well.  Our youngest three grew up having lessons from their dad in the backyard with the neighborhood kids. As word spread, students from more distant neighborhoods and adjacent cities came.

After 6 years teaching in West Jordan, we felt impressed to uproot ourselves, but didn't want to leave behind the benefits we had from our swim business.  We were very grateful to friends and neighbors who spread the word, for past students who made the 35 minute drive to Lehi, and for all those who took from us last year before our landscaping and pool offices were complete.  Thanks for coming back!

We are almost finished!  The sheet rock is hung in the pool office/bathroom/changing room.  The mudding/taping is in process.  And within the next couple weeks, painting will be finished and the "construction phase" will be behind us!

Current students will be able to register for session II the last night of class.  For new students, registration for Session 2 will begin Memorial Day at 9am and continue through the week until classes fill up or begin on Thursday, June 1st.  Please see our calendar for additional dates.  Placement testing is available after class Tuesday/Thursday or by appointment.  Please email us at littleflippersswimacademy@gmail.com or call us at 801-282-5965 to arrange a time.

It's time for our summer 2017 Swim Season.

Registration for Session I classes is now open for our Session I (begins week of May 8th and ends prior to Memorial Day)!  Some classes fill up quickly.  If a class fills, you will be placed on a waiting list.  Classes are added as need requires.  We anticipate a lightly attended session in May with school and extracurricular activities still in session, but wanted to offer something for those who were able and interested in getting started.  We are new here in Lehi so please help us spread the word to your friends, family and neighbors.  We love getting to know all of you!

Free Placement testing appointments are available at our customer portal.  In order to see placement testing and class dates and times, please refer to our  Calendar.

  • Placement testing is mandatory for new students wanting to register for Learn to Swim Level II or higher.
  • Returning students should register for the last class level they took or come for placement testing to ensure they have retained skills.
  • Students ages 3-4 should register for Preschool.
  • For students 2 and under  Parent/Tot will be offered in June.  This class will be taught by McKenzi Hunt on Monday/Wednesday at 5:30pm.

Our pool will remain enclosed through Memorial Day - then, depending on the weather, we pop off the sliding door and the cover collapses in on itself, resulting in an outdoor pool during those warm summer months:

We also have an outdoor bathroom and changing room ready for this summer season, and the landscaping is now complete.

(Thanks to those who came out for our first summer 2016 in Lehi and roughed it with us in the new pool with no grass while they finished the concrete walks etc. )

Sessions II and III are scheduled for June and July.  A mid-August to early September session may be added at a later date.

Our oldest, McKenzi turns 16 in March and is planning to get her Red Cross Water Safety Instructor training certificate following her birthday.  Trent and McKenzi will both be teaching group lessons this year with McKenzi also available for private lessons.  Our girls have helped Trent in the pool for years once they passed the highest Red-Cross levels.  McKenzi has been life-guarding at the Legacy Center in Lehi since turning 15 last year and has also assisted with  swimming lessons there.

Hope to see you for one, two or all three of our 2017 swim sessions.

The on-line registration and studio information will be available beginning April 1st.
